A big day today.
“The race that stops a nation!”
Gentle hands smooth nerves…

Author’s Note: The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most prestigious annual Thoroughbred horse race. It is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It is the richest “two-mile” handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3pm on the first Tuesday in November and is known locally as “the race that stops a nation”. Over recent years, the spotlight has shifted onto the welfare of the horses, over their potential income/winnings. Let’s hope they actually do this and take care of all the beautiful, majestic animals running today for our human amusement.
Prompt: Ronovan Writes, Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt, Challenge #174 – smooth and hand
This reminds me of a a sweet horse who lost her life at the finish line of the Kentucky Derby nearly 10 years ago. The image of it is burned into my mind. She was a beauty, look her up sometime, as you will surely fall in love. Her name was Eight Belles ❤

It’s just awful isn’t it. The image of animals in distress indeed stays with you 😢😢😢 In the 2015 Melbourne Cup three horses had to be put down. For me, it’s hard to enjoy this ‘sport’

I like the haiku. Thanks for the Authors note on the whole process. Sounds like everyone is engaged by this race. I hope they are taking care of the horses.
